As for the rest....you say you blame "much of this" on the orange monster. I blame all of it on him. Thanks to the 73 million illiterate, moronic morons who voted for him, we are awash in his slime and it is going to take at least a generation to wash it off.
So often people go "why don't women tell someone?" This stuff is why. They get embarrassment and death threats, and the guy gets excused, sooner rather than later. And anyone choosing to enrich JKR at this point, AFTER she announced all Harry Potter profit would go into her war against trans people has joined her side in her war, which makes me sad.
So many of us are with you. Ignoring "pop" culture, at least the sh*t born out of Trump and predecessors, is an act of self-protection. It also leaves us woefully vulnerable to virulent attacks of hatred and physical danger. Just can't keep up. Thanks for writing and posting; I can't keep up, but know it's necessary. Let's keep watching each other's backs, speaking up, face to face. It's ugly work. Our allies will help.
I’m glad you brought this around to the Trump-effect, because the title alone suggested it could have been written about anyone in the Trump administration from the rotting fish on down.
My latest theory (based on the accelerating madness without an apparent coinciding popular revolt) is that everything advanced, polite societies deem embarrassing or incorrect is just an echo of the far more violent and consequential versions of the same behavior when they occur in less genteel circumstances.
Today’s embarrassments are yesterday’s mortal aversions.
In other words, quite a few more people might have to die or be disappeared from the bellicose and thoughtless behavior of the Trump administration before we reset our thermostats.

It lifts my heart and lightens my emotional load when we have men join our fight to be treated with basic dignity and decency (and of course equality,but tiny tiny baby steps in this incremental nation, lest we upset those at the top of the white-hetero-male-patriarchal hierarchy). I certainly had my share of stories reflected in MeToo (doubted and blamed feel very familiar) and I am endlessly enraged watching it get stomped under the jackboots of the manosphere.
I will definitely buy a copy of your mom's book - along with a few extra to put in the stack of books I give away outside my library during Banned Books Week, cuz I have no doubt someone is gonna get in a nuclear level snit over it.
I was not aware of "Army of the Dead" but definitely gonna view it.
I am good with reminding people that if they are not embarrassed about aligning with Kanye, C.K., D'Alia et al, I am happy to heap shame on them until I can elicit embarrassment. And I got some mad energy for that.
And as for JD Vance.....As someone who gave up Catholocism for Lent as a child, I am astonished to find myself rooting for the church. Go Pope Leo!!!

You don’t get to skip accountability and call it progress.
If there’s no repair, there’s no growth.
If there’s no consequence, there’s no change.
Otherwise we’re just…normalizing the same behavior on a loop and calling it culture.
And yeah...I’m still laughing.
Because the alternative is realizing how deeply broken that cycle is.
