I hadn't thought about the crayon episode in forever. It's funny how the whole thing just comes back in an instant. We won't let him destroy PBS. Not now. Not ever.
As a fan of Daniel the Tiger when he was an actual hand puppet (which makes me incredibly old), I agree that all the spin offs from that (Fred Rogers was a writer and a voice character in the originals that were hosted by Josie Carey, which might have only appeared on certain local PBS stations - OK, yeah, I'm reeeeeally old) and everything on PBS is fantastic. I'm pretty sure "How it's Made" - which I also love - must have been inspired by the crayon episode. Long live (with a lot of help from us) PBS!
Uuuuuuuuuurgh, current events as of late seem so particularly dark & disturbing that I’m finding it hard to even listen to jokes about them. And yet we must laugh so as to not crumble into a ball of despair on the floor 🫠 And take action too, of course. The crayon episode is like ASMR for your eyes, so meditative. KQED for life! 🖍️❤️
Catching up on reading your wonderful, heartening everything.
1. Born in ‘47 so all that part of PBS was during my adulthood AND did see the crayon making one because a) love crayons & b) am curious about almost everything.
2.Before I left my hometown - same one of Jonathan Winters & the Wright Bros - I worked with our PBS station creating on-air auction fundraisers & others for our art museum.
3. You gave your CJ (which I almost wrote as “JC” which made me laugh) winnings to DonorsChoose - my limited monthly donation place among three. I wish I could do more. Which brings me to
4.I finally announced my ability to now read Substacks “on time” - not really stated that way tho I shoulda: after almost 44 years of my own consultancy doing work for NGOs - all on the left in housing, reproductive rights, low income energy, the arts - long COVID, from COVID contracted in late March 2023, forced me to stop working. It took 5 months to say what I’d done 12/31/24 - and adjust a bit. At 78 and not working like I did is odd. Reading your Substack & others’ & reposting is grand. My brain can’t slow down - my curiosity refuses to.
So thanks. I’d contact our Delegate to Congress, the great civil rights icon, Eleanor Holmes Norton except she believe as I do & would vote for PBS & other good funding if she only had a vote. (Yes, sung to the Scarecrow’s song.)
Thank you for all your good and sharing it. Finding Joy where I can!
PS: Junior tweeted & lots of reposts on BlueSky that he wondered how Dr Jill Biden hadn’t diagnosed her husband’s cancer. Oh yes THAT dumb to confuse her with the fictional Abigail Bartlett, MD, another First Lady!
Last month, Indiana state lawmakers approved eliminating financial support for all 17 public broadcasting stations in the state's new two-year budget. Gov. Mike Braun signed the legislation into law on May 6. Therefore, when we renew our subscription it will be to an Indiana (where we're from) station rather than Illinois (where we currently live) - Nothing against IL, but IN has a bigger need now. I suspect there are other states in similar situations.
I met Mr. Rogers a few times- I live in Pittsburgh where he filmed his show- the best was when I got to bring my friend Jerry, a man with intellectual disabilities to a live taping of his show. Fred Rogers sat with Jerry and sang the neighborhood song with him. One of the best moments of my life
Best thing I've read today. Gives me hope; makes me smile. Many, many thanks 🥰♾️
The crayon episode was my son’s favorite Mr. Rogers episode💜💜💜

Me too.
Omg Wild Kratts was my saving grace the other night when I sat for my niblings! Also thanks again for another banger of a read that makes my day.
Wow, this one packed a punch! Thanks for a great article that’s motivated me, and i’m sure others, to take action. Keep doing what you’re doing!
::runs off to fight for PBS::
::whilst gripping a handful of crayons:: Thank you for your latest fabulous substack.
And again, another treasure trove from WKB. Deep and lighted learning about important things!
That testimony of Mr Rogers' ripped me up. Where is all the straight thinking gone to?

I (lovingly) blame Mister Roger's How to Make a Crayon for my later adulthood obsession with the show How It's Made 😄
