I'm totally with you on the Gaza issue, which is why I'm worried that Josh Shapiro is still coming up as a possible VP candidate. Maybe the stories are just to keep us paying attention or showing up above the fold. I'm Jewish too, but I'm NOT a Zionist and there's a BIG difference, like between Latkes and universal conscription. Mark Kelly has national name recognition as an Astronaut, former military, and caring husband of assassination survivor Gabby Giffords. And we need Arizona at the top of the ticket to put an end to Kari Lake. Just sayin'...

Thank you for this. And I love the writing of the difference “between Latkes and universal conscription”. And I share your VP anxiety. I also think our job is to push her to be on the right side of history no matter who she picks. Thank you this note! I’m with you!

❤️from south Texas. Cheered me up and educated me at the same time. Sad to say, I violated #3 yesterday, was furious with, well, all the overt crap--in the workplace, no less. We were all gathered together for lunch.

I went and printed out two things--the biography of our VP's dad and then the wiki on his place of birth. Yellow highlighter on the pertinent parts of how Jamaica was part of the slave trade.

Bad idea. My anger got the best of me. Couldn't eat and felt I'd poisoned myself. Such is life--will never pull that stunt again and I appreciate your reinforcement. BTW, I actually apologized for losing my temper and happy boy 'thought we were joking!' [Not with all that nasty talk that doesn't bear repeating.] Good grief.

In any event, today is a new day and I will do my part. Many thanks

I’m glad you realized that you don’t need to slam your head against metaphorical walls (or coworkers) for no good reason. Let’s all focus on the areas that are productive and actually important! I’m with you!

And remember: DON'T ASSume downballot elections aren't as important as POTUS. We want to vote ALL the bastids out!

I thought I'd mention some facts about 3rd party races. Ross Perot got the biggest popular vote of any 3rd party candidate at 19%. However, he didn't get any electoral votes. (WTF?) The 3rd party candidate who got the largest number of electoral votes was Teddy Roosevelt with 88. (However, we have more states now.) Unrelated to politics (except to say yay, Tim Walz!), but you asked for recommendations on Donors Choose and I like this huge goal of getting backpacks and alllll the school supplies for the 3-5th graders in Stockton: https://www.donorschoose.org/project/in-memory-ms-aissas-prep-for-success/8416158/

I'm from the Bay Area so I'm familiar with Kamala's work for CA. Really glad she now has the platform to define herself and clarify her beliefs in front of the entire USA.--that cannot be easy but she is energized by the challenge and now so are we. It's so exciting to have a younger candidate! ( all due respect to President Biden). She has minimal baggage that she can overcome with some reframing and she’s ready to chart a new direction away from Biden. What I hope to see from her: serious and I mean serious police/criminal justice reform, re-think Israel, cease fire in Gaza, movement toward all kinds of accountability for Big Bads of Big Oil, Tech and Pharma. And much more. Glad to see a Black, bi-racial woman leading the way to the USA of the future. Glad to see the Dems new “fight back” messaging. It’s about time!

Here's another perspective--the conversation on Friday also included slurs against Japanese and Chinese people. I lived in Portland, Oregon and was taught about the internment camps by my 6th grade teacher, Mr. Nitta. He was great--explained he had to teach us art and wasn't sure about this but he taught us origami and haiku. Later, when I was in high school, I worked for an import store owned by Japanese Americans and my coworkers were Chinese women my age. As a senior, my counselor was Harold Onishi. Because of him, I went to Vassar on a scholarship. Here's his story--and the advice on how to respond is a little different in the piece--perhaps context matters: https://secure.smore.com/n/c2fz1-lessons-from-the-past

My parents always told us to pick our battles and maybe this entire lesson is an excellent example. In any event, thanks again for your article. Take care

Ria Mar! Excellent. Stand out. Thank you. 5 min. ago I received a donation at the trans youth organization I work for. It was a donation in the memory of a young student, a student who decided it was too tough to go on was now part of us, growth for our programs and this type of donation comes often when a young person takes their life. This was literally 5 min ago and hard for the staff to see again. Then Kamau Bell's new writing came up with this interview. The timing was helpful and the rights and safety of young people, students, has to be honored. This is how we are suppose to live in a civilized society. To care for every student.. Thank you ACLU. Check out our work the great staff here does . www.transyouthequality..org since 2007.
