I'm ever-so-concerned about the Supreme Court's assault on our system. Right now, they're very possibly allowing the former guy to delay (or avoid completely) trials. They've already put the country in a healthcare/reproductive rights/bodily autonomy tailspin. What can we do to stop them from destroying/enabling the destruction of our democracy? Is it too late for us?
My question goes to the heart of free speech, as defined and practiced in this country.
EU nations are (for the most part) democracies, yet they ban certain forms of hate speech, whereas, the US refuses even to entertain the idea of restrictions on speech.
Where has this "noble, yet flawed " absolutist approach taken us? Over 1M dead from Covid, a government on the brink of collapse from millions who believe the 2020 election was "stolen", loss of abortion rights (in part) during to lies about "late-term" abortions. I could go on an on.
Disinformation is destroying the very fabric of society, and more speech clearly isn't the solution...particularly when our media ecosystem is deliberately indulging misinformation and disinformation.
Isn't it time to consider limited restrictions and consequences for hate speech and disinformation?
What has to happen to get President Biden or any of his spokesperson to express concern for and condemn the blatant violation of many rights on an ever growing number of US campuses and the flabbergasting use of police violence against peaceful demonstrations?
How can Biden and Co., with their complicit silence, watch college campuses become more and more militarized, with snipers on roofs (University of Indiana Bloomingdale's IMU building) policemen going around with big rifles (Emory), throwing students and professors to the ground and handcuffing them (Emory), arresting students and faculty (many colleges), tasering students peacefully protesting?
Biden and Co. are knowingly supporting and complicit with police violence on campuses. Here as in Gaza (and the Occupied Territories) they prefer to look away and tell themselves blatant lies. But the citizens of the US and of the world see them for what they are: dangerous liars.
Conservative legal groups, right-wing "parents rights" groups and think tanks fueled by dark money are taking aim against, DEI, ethnic studies and antiracist education policies in our nation's public schools. LGBTQ-affirming history and programs are also being forced out of the classroom. This is putting students from historically marginalized backgrounds in the cross-hairs. Since Trump was elected, more and more children are reporting bullying, hate speech and harassment. This trend has continued, unabated under the Biden administration. What is the ACLU doing to support Black, LGBTQ and immigrant families in ensuring their children have access to educational spaces that are free from hate speech and discrimination?
What will it take for the US to stop supporting, funding, arming and being complicit with Israel? How can Biden and administration continue to do so, in the face of over 35,000 Palestinians killed (over 14,000 of which children), 70,000 maimed and injured, tons of bombs dropped daily, the destruction of all infrastructures and notwithstanding the ICJ provisional measures against Israel and the ICJ acknowledgement that South Africa's accusation of genocide against Israel is plausible?
Small town rural Iowa needs advice on getting our new immigrants and neighbors a chance of living and working here when the immigration court in Omaha is scheduling 3-4 minute hearings for 30,000 + cases for 3 judges. Help us understand the different types visas, and how those affect their residency requirements. Local Cuban immigrants here on asylum are waiting up to a year before they can even apply. Meanwhile our Governor is authorizing local police, Highway Patrol, Deputies and Sheriffs to detain people who "look illegal".
I' so tired of all the hate and division. Its so exhausting to constantly learn about all the ways the right works to over-ride the will of the people and sow hatred ; especially the supreme court. We have lost womens rights, voting rights, environmental rights, rights for people of color and different sexual orientation. It feels like fighting a tidal wave with a thimble. I would love if we could sue for taking away our rights to live in peace and harmony and advance our society if everyone was given the same rights, not just a select few
I am worried and scared about this year's election choices. We either have Biden who doesn't appear to be doing much OR Trump, who I feel shouldn't have even have been allowed to run because of all his past actions and comments. What do we do? If people vote for the independent choices then it could put Trump back in office. I just don't understand why Trump has not been found guilty for any of his past actions and now he has been found to have had classified files that he took from the White House (unlawfully??). Why are judges/ authorities afraid to take on Trump? And why are his supporters so "blind". I am afraid that if Trump is allowed back into office we will see another "Hitler" type government of hate.

Thank you for providing this service.

I hope Jill Stein will win the elections!

Love the ACLU! We must throw Trump and all MAGAts in jail to protect our sacred democracy.
I’ve just discovered Loretta J Ross - can you interview her? I’d love to see the two of you in conversation!!!

The TIME article today outlining DJT's platform had my head spinning. We need to start with all that fuckery.
What a great idea! Thanx!
Thanks for opening it up to all.
What can you tell us about federal education funding and the Secretary of Education?
